In 1886 the Belgian (Flemish) painter and sculptor Constant Permeke was born in Antwerp.
Also in 1886 King Alfonso XIII of Spain was born in Madrid and Robert Schuman, one of the founders of the European Unions, in Luxembourg. There are two memorials to Robert Schumann in Brussels (they both display the year 1886). One memorial has the shape of a monolith. It stands at the entrance of the headquarters of the European Commission. The other one is a bust and it is located at the entrance of the Parc du Cinquantenaire – Jubelpark, close to the memorial to Alfred Thys (see my post on 1887).
Also in 1886 a demonstration took place in Brussels for the universal suffrage.
The pictures I show with my post include one of a house in rue du Congrès (now part of a hotel) by architect Oscar Simon. Readers will find another house built in 1898 by this same architect, in the corner of the rue Ernest Allard and the Place du Grand Sablon.
