The 19th Century in Brussels: 1888

This year is a difficult one. Myself I did not find a house marked with 1888. What I did find was a picture, in Flickr, showing a house with the year. Here is the link to the picture in Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24271543@N03/6344380367/

The only thing I could find were one memorial to the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa, born in 1888 and a plaque in a very old building in Uccle remembering the Belgian painter Paul-Auguste Masui-Castrique, also born in 1888.  He died in Uccle (Brussels Region) in 1981. Here are a few  links on this painter.

A picture of the building with the plaque can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/polisea/592500710/

Another Belgian painter, Henri-Jean Colson was born in 1888 and painted in Montparnasse most of his life. He died in 1975 and was a contemporary of Magritte. His works were mostly abstract and consisted of color compositions. At the time of writing this post works of this painter can be seen at a temporary exhibition at the house where Magritte had his studio (Museum René Magritte). The exhibition runs until 22 January 2012.

1888 marked the death of yet another Belgian painter, Henri de Brakeleer. He lived in Antwerp and died in 1888.
